EnergieHafenWest is a demonstration project designed to modernize the power supply for electricity, heating and cooling at a former industrial site in Ludwigsburg’s Weststadt. Factoring the local power generated by a photovoltaic (PV) system and a combined heat and power plant (CHP) into the equation, it will explore how to make the most of a CHP with heat storage units while responding to the electricity market. A smart grid will serve to manage the individual components of this energy system, which will be more flexible with added battery and heat storage systems. The technical requirements and regulatory framework play key roles in this project’s implementation.
Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim, a public utility, is leading the project. The ZSW and the Tübingen-based energy engineering company AVAT will each furnish one version of a forecast-based generation and load management solution for the energy supply system. As the scientific partner in this project, the ZSW will assess the result in terms of performance and the impact of various revenue sources, system services and managed electricity purchases.
Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector is sponsoring the EnergieHafenWest project as part of a funding program for smart grid and storage demonstration projects called Demonstrationsprojekte Smart Grids und Speicher Baden-Württemberg.
